Morning: Marienplatz and New Town Hall

Start your exploration in Marienplatz, the heart of Munich and a hub of activity for over 850 years. Surrounded by historic buildings, Marienplatz is home to the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus), a stunning neo-gothic structure with intricate carvings and spires. Be sure to catch the famous Glockenspiel show at 11 AM or noon, when life-sized figures re-enact Bavarian tales accompanied by music and bells.

Afternoon: Viktualienmarkt

A short walk from Marienplatz, you’ll find Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s oldest and most popular outdoor market. Originally a farmers’ market, Viktualienmarkt now features over 140 stalls selling everything from fresh produce and flowers to traditional Bavarian foods. Stop by for a hearty lunch at one of the stands offering sausages, pretzels, and local cheeses, and try some traditional beer at the central beer garden surrounded by bustling stalls, it’s one of my favourite places, you can easily spend the rest of the day here.

Evening: Frauenkirche

Conclude your first day with a visit to the Frauenkirche, Munich’s iconic twin-towered cathedral. Officially known as the Cathedral of Our Dear Lady, Frauenkirche dates back to the 15th century and is an important symbol of the city. Inside, marvel at the vaulted ceilings and beautiful stained glass windows. For a breathtaking view, climb the south tower to take in panoramic views over Munich and even the Alps on clear days.

Morning: Nymphenburg Palace

Start your day with a trip to the magnificent Nymphenburg Palace, the grand summer residence of the Bavarian rulers. The palace’s Baroque architecture, lavishly decorated rooms, and sprawling gardens provide a glimpse into the opulence of 17th-century Bavarian royalty. Don’t miss the Hall of Mirrors and the ornate Royal Apartments. Outside, the landscaped gardens with ponds, fountains, and pavilions are perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Stroll along scenic trails, watch surfers riding the artificial wave on the Eisbach river, and enjoy the iconic Chinese Tower beer garden for a refreshing Bavarian beer. The garden’s natural beauty is particularly stunning in spring and autumn.

Morning: Alte Pinakothek

Art lovers should start their day at the Alte Pinakothek, one of the oldest and most celebrated art galleries in the world. Be sure to see Rubens’ massive “Last Judgment,” which is a focal point of the gallery’s exhibits.

Next, visit the Munich Residenz, the former royal palace of Bavarian monarchs. Highlights include the lavish Antiquarium, with its magnificent arches, and the Treasury, filled with royal jewels and regalia.
