Traveling can be Disappointing, says a Woman

A woman’s opinion on modern vacations being disappointing due to technological advancements and excessive social media use has sparked discussions online.
Helene Sula, an American living in England, is a full-time travel blogger and author who documents her adventures through vlogs and photos.
Sula has noticed the negative impact of social media and cellphones on the travel experience.

“I think people now travel to capture moments for social media rather than appreciating the true essence of a place,” Sula shared in an interview with Fox News Digital.
“There’s a trend of focusing more on posting pictures and videos online rather than immersing oneself in the historical significance of a location.”
The Oxford resident believes that travelers are missing out on recognizing the beauty and history of the places they visit.
Sula observes that many people aim to capture a superficial highlight without understanding the journey that led to that moment.

“When we do something exciting, we tend to showcase it to prove ourselves and say, ‘Look at me, look at what I’m doing,'” explained Sula, the author of “Two O’Clock on a Tuesday at Trevi Fountain: A Search for an Unconventional Life Abroad.”

“The reality is that travel can be challenging. Taking flights and trains, dealing with jet lag and tiredness. Travel isn’t always glamorous; it can be tough, and we often fail to depict these aspects and only showcase, for instance, the Trevi Fountain.”

Despite recognizing the positive aspects of social media in discovering new destinations and sharing memories, Sula emphasizes the importance of disconnecting from technology and fully embracing the present moment.

“We have become overly reliant on technology, believing that we can’t live life to the fullest without our phones,” she added.

“While it’s essential to capture memories, attend concerts, and visit places, we must not forget that it’s possible to take photos or videos and still live in the moment. We don’t need to document every second.”
Sula expressed her initial thoughts about travel being disappointing on Instagram, receiving overwhelming support from users who shared similar sentiments.
“Instead of traveling for the views, I now focus on the stories behind places and the people I meet, completely changing my travel perspective,” one Instagram user commented.

Other users echoed similar experiences, like one who visited the Great Wall of China and chose to savor the moment rather than constantly using their phone to capture every detail.

Sula encourages travelers to appreciate the history and significance of the places they visit, rather than passively snapping photos without truly experiencing the wonders in front of them.
“Traveling offers immense opportunities for learning and exploring, whether it’s as a tourist in your own city, visiting neighboring states, or exploring internationally,” Sula stated.

“By delving into the history of a location, which is readily accessible during travels, one can gain valuable knowledge. Understanding the history, architecture, and culture of landmarks enhances the travel experience, broadening horizons and adding more depth,” she concluded.
